Convenience store helps after Durham family paid off mortgage, but lien remained

DURHAM, NC (WTVD) – A Durham homeowner had a mortgage mess despite paying off his mortgage years ago when he found out there was still a lien on his property.

“It was like $ 75,000, they said we had to, and I was like no, I don’t, no, this is my house,” said Jennifer Jackola, who has the papers to prove it. ‘she and her husband paid off their mortgage in full in 2017 to BB&T.

When they tried to get a home equity loan, they learned that the original lien holder, Columbia National, never released their lien.

“BB&T, we paid in 2017, and I’m like, surely you paid the original lender? Jackola said. “I mean, they would have come and seized my house.”

While BB&T records show the Jackolas paid for their house, Columbia National’s original privilege has remained. Jackola said she spent countless hours with BB&T trying to resolve the issue. She said she told BB&T, “I need proof you paid them.”

She said BB&T couldn’t – or maybe wouldn’t – give her that proof of payment.

After an unsuccessful year of trying to resolve the problem on her own, she contacted Tow Truck Diane Wilson.

“It was frustrating and then they told me to hire a lawyer and I was like, no I shouldn’t have to fork out the money I paid you guys,” Jackola said.

Tow truck Diane Wilson contacted BB&T, which is now Truist Mortgage, and Columbia National, which is now Ocwen. No response from Ocwen, but Truist Mortgage worked hard to get results.

“It was worth the wait,” said Jackola at Convenience Store. “I finally have a piece of paper in my hand that says I own my property in County Durham.”

A representative from Truist Mortgage said, “At Truist Mortgage, we take great pride in helping customers and exceeding their expectations. We are delighted that we were able to solve this problem and that the customer is completely satisfied with the result.

Jackola said she was glad she didn’t have to worry about this again.

“It was worth the wait,” she told Le Dépanneur. “My husband and I are extremely grateful for your help. I really can’t thank you enough. I never thought you would really want to come and help me. I never thought I would have to ask for it. ‘help, but I am very I appreciate it. “

The best advice is to always keep important documents, and if you do not receive a copy of the records as proof of payment, request these documents for your records.
